From natural gas via SMR. Most common today. High CO2 emissions.

Blue

Same as grey, with carbon capture and storage. Lower emissions, still fossil-based.

Green

Electrolysis powered by renewables. Near-zero emissions. The gold standard.

Turquoise

Methane pyrolysis — carbon captured as a solid. Emerging technology.

Pink

Electrolysis powered by nuclear electricity. Zero-carbon but controversial.

White

Naturally occurring geological hydrogen. Rare and largely unexplored.
